Tragedy in Gombe as Four Drown; Police Issue Water Safety Advisory

Gombe, July 1, 2025 — A tragic incident occurred in Gombe State over the weekend as four individuals drowned in separate water-related accidents, prompting the state police command to issue a public safety advisory to residents.

According to the Gombe State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mahid Muazu Abubakar, the unfortunate incidents were recorded across different locations during the Sallah festivities, particularly at natural water bodies often frequented for leisure and recreational purposes.

The police disclosed that among the victims were two teenagers who drowned while swimming in a river in the Akko Local Government Area. Two additional deaths were reported in the Yamaltu-Deba axis under similar circumstances. Despite rescue efforts by locals, all attempts to save the victims proved unsuccessful.

Reacting to the incidents, the Gombe State Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Usman, expressed deep concern over the rising number of avoidable deaths associated with open water activities. He called on parents, guardians, and community leaders to be more vigilant, especially during festive seasons when youths are prone to engaging in risky adventures.

“We advise the general public to avoid swimming in rivers, streams, and other water bodies that lack proper safety measures or lifeguard presence. These areas pose serious risks, especially during the rainy season when water levels and currents can become dangerous without warning,” CP Usman warned.

The police also encouraged local governments to increase public awareness campaigns and install warning signs around dangerous water points. Citizens were further advised to report any emergency or suspicious activity near such areas to the nearest security post.

As investigations into the drowning incidents continue, the Gombe State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and urged residents to prioritise safety and exercise caution around water bodies.
