Tragedy in Lagos as 40-Foot Truck Crushes Minibus, Kills Driver – LASTMA Rescues Three Survivors

Lagos, June 23, 2025 — A tragic road accident occurred in the Ijesha area of Lagos State when a 40-foot container-laden truck lost control and rammed into a commercial minibus, killing the driver on the spot. Three other occupants of the minibus were rescued with varying degrees of injury, thanks to the swift intervention of officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened during the early hours of the day, causing panic and heavy traffic gridlock along the busy route. The minibus, reportedly parked to pick up passengers, was crushed from behind when the truck driver allegedly failed to brake in time.

Officials of LASTMA, alongside men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), quickly arrived at the scene to coordinate rescue efforts and manage the traffic situation. The injured victims were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, while the body of the deceased driver was evacuated to a mortuary.

Preliminary reports indicate that brake failure may have contributed to the fatal crash, although investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause. LASTMA officials have since cleared the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow in the area.

The General Manager of LASTMA, while confirming the incident, urged motorists to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles, especially heavy-duty trucks, to prevent avoidable road tragedies. He also advised drivers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations and exercise caution, particularly in densely populated urban centres like Lagos.

The incident adds to the growing concerns over road safety and the enforcement of vehicle standards, especially among operators of articulated vehicles in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
