Troops Foil Terrorist Bribery Attempt, Reject ₦13.7 Million Offer During Operation in Plateau

In a bold display of integrity and professionalism, troops under Operation Safe Haven have turned down a ₦13.7 million bribe allegedly offered by terrorists during a recent operation in Plateau State. This was disclosed on Thursday by the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, while giving an update on recent military activities across various theatres of operation in the country.

According to military authorities, the troops were acting on a distress call regarding suspected terrorist movements along the Jos–Sanga Road. Upon arriving at the scene, they intercepted a suspicious Toyota vehicle riddled with bullet holes. A search of the vehicle revealed a stash of ₦13.7 million in cash, which, according to preliminary investigations, was offered to the soldiers by the occupants in a desperate bid to evade arrest.

However, the troops rejected the bribe outright and arrested the suspects for further investigation. The Defence Headquarters commended the personnel for maintaining high ethical standards and for demonstrating loyalty to national security objectives, despite the temptation posed by the large sum of money.

The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation, while the seized cash has been documented as evidence and handed over to the appropriate authorities. Military officials added that the incident serves as a clear warning to criminal elements who believe they can buy their way out of justice.

Operation Safe Haven, a military task force charged with maintaining peace in Plateau and parts of Kaduna and Bauchi States, has intensified its presence in key flashpoints in recent weeks, following intelligence reports of renewed terrorist activity. The Defence Headquarters reiterated its commitment to eradicating all forms of insurgency and criminality in the region, calling on the public to continue supporting the troops with credible information.
