Lagos, Nigeria – June 16, 2025
A Nigerian returnee from the United States has accused officials of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, of extortion and theft amounting to ₦1 million during his arrival into the country.
The victim, who requested anonymity for security reasons, claimed that after landing in Lagos, Customs officers allegedly subjected him to unjustified scrutiny, forcefully demanded payment for his personal items, and later seized both cash and valuables from his luggage without documentation or receipts.
The incident has sparked renewed public outrage over alleged corruption and misconduct by airport officials. Several advocacy groups have called for a thorough investigation and disciplinary action against any officers found guilty.
In response, the Nigeria Customs Service said it was aware of the allegation and promised a full probe.
Airport authorities and rights groups are urging victims of such abuse to speak out and report directly to relevant government hotlines or anti-corruption agencies.
