Wolves head coach Vitor Pereira has played down concerns over Matheus Cunha’s commitment to the club, despite the striker’s recent comments expressing a desire to leave.
Cunha, who has a £62.5m release clause in his contract, told the Observer that he has informed the club of his need to “take the next step” and compete for titles. However, Pereira is confident that the Brazilian international remains committed to Wolves for the time being.
“He is committed. This is the present. The future, I don’t know,” Pereira said. “He knows his potential. He is a top player. It’s normal he has the ambition to fight for titles. It’s natural.”
Cunha has scored 15 goals for Wolves this season, but is currently serving a four-game ban for misconduct. He will miss the club’s upcoming games against West Ham and Ipswich, but will be available for selection against Tottenham on April 13.
Pereira emphasized the importance of focusing on the team’s immediate goals, rather than worrying about Cunha’s long-term future. “The focus is the next game. The focus is the team and Matheus makes part of the team,” he said.
