In a bid to curb environmental degradation and prevent flooding, the Lagos State Government has arrested 23 individuals for illegally dumping waste into drainage channels in Agege.
The culprits were apprehended during a joint enforcement operation by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. The operation targeted notorious black spots where indiscriminate waste disposal has been a recurring issue.
According to a government statement, the suspects were caught in the act of dumping refuse and other debris directly into open drains, an offence that contravenes the state’s environmental protection laws.
The government stressed that such acts worsen the risk of flooding, especially during the rainy season, and warned that more arrests would follow as surveillance and enforcement are intensified.
Residents have been urged to make use of designated waste bins and adhere to Lagos State’s environmental guidelines, or risk facing legal consequences.
