Amid the escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, the Federal Government has intensified efforts to complete the emergency evacuation of Nigerian citizens currently stranded in both countries. This assurance was given by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
The evacuation plan comes as the conflict enters its seventh day, with the Nigerian government continuing to advocate for an immediate end to the violence and the prioritisation of diplomatic dialogue. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has consistently called for restraint from both sides, stressing the need to uphold international humanitarian law and protect civilian lives.
Ambassador Tuggar disclosed that in light of the deteriorating security conditions in the region, the government is finalising arrangements to safely extract its nationals from affected zones. He urged all Nigerian citizens in Israel and Iran to maintain strict compliance with local security advisories and to immediately contact the nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate for registration and further evacuation instructions.
The minister also commended the dedication and responsiveness of Nigeria’s diplomatic missions in Tel Aviv and Tehran, noting their crucial role in coordinating with the Nigerian community during this challenging period.
“Our government remains unwavering in its commitment to the safety and well-being of Nigerians, both at home and abroad,” Tuggar said. “We are working closely with international partners and local authorities to ensure that the evacuation process is timely, safe, and well-coordinated.”
He emphasised that the ongoing crisis highlights the importance of proactive diplomacy and global solidarity, reiterating Nigeria’s support for peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms. The minister also renewed Nigeria’s appeal to all parties involved in the conflict to cease hostilities, embrace constructive dialogue, and respect international laws that safeguard human rights and civilian populations.
Nigeria, which has consistently maintained a non-aligned foreign policy rooted in peace, diplomacy, and mutual respect among nations, once again reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to global peace and regional stability through dialogue and international cooperation.
As tensions continue to mount in the Middle East, the Federal Government’s swift action to protect its citizens reinforces its constitutional responsibility and sends a clear message that Nigerian lives remain a top priority, regardless of location.
