The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that tertiary institutions demonstrating exceptional performance in academic and administrative excellence have collectively received a total of ₦2.42 billion through its merit-based awards.
JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, made this known during a recent address, emphasizing that the funds were distributed under the board’s Annual National Tertiary Admissions Performance Merit Award (ANTAPMA), designed to reward institutions that uphold integrity, transparency, and efficiency in their admission processes.
According to Professor Oloyede, the merit award scheme recognizes institutions that strictly adhere to JAMB’s admission guidelines, innovate in academic administration, and maintain fairness in student admissions. He stated that the initiative has led to a remarkable improvement in compliance with due process and boosted healthy competition among tertiary institutions nationwide.
He noted that public universities, private institutions, and polytechnics that performed exceptionally well between 2018 and 2023 were selected for the awards, with the University of Ilorin, University of Lagos, and Lagos State University among the top recipients.
The Registrar added that the awarded funds are not just symbolic but are meant to support these institutions in enhancing their infrastructure, research capacity, and administrative operations. He reiterated JAMB’s commitment to promoting a merit-driven admission system that rewards excellence and curbs corruption in Nigeria’s education sector.
JAMB called on all institutions to continue embracing best practices, assuring them that outstanding performance would always be acknowledged and incentivized.
