Kano Police Uphold Ban on Durbar Amid Security Concerns Ahead of Eid-el-Kabir Festivities

The Kano State Police Command has reaffirmed its decision to maintain the ban on all forms of Durbar processions and related activities across the state during the forthcoming 2025 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, citing serious security threats and credible intelligence reports pointing to possible disruptions of public peace.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the command stressed that the prohibition, which was first introduced during the last Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, remains in effect due to the continued volatility in the state’s security landscape. The police disclosed that intelligence gathered in collaboration with other security agencies indicates that certain individuals and groups are plotting to hijack the traditional event to incite chaos and destabilise the ancient city, particularly in light of the ongoing tensions surrounding the emirship tussle.

The unresolved power struggle between the reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and the deposed Emir, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has created palpable tension in the state. This, according to the police, has raised concerns about potential clashes between rival supporters during the usually flamboyant Durbar festival—a historic event characterised by horseback processions, cultural displays, and royal parades.

“To avert the risk of violence and protect the lives and property of citizens, a comprehensive ban on all Durbar-related activities is hereby reaffirmed,” the police stated. “The command, acting on credible intelligence and in synergy with other security stakeholders, is fully committed to ensuring peace and stability during the Sallah celebration.”

The police further warned against activities capable of disrupting public order, including reckless driving, car racing, unauthorized animal parades, and the illegal possession or public display of firearms or any suspicious items that could incite fear or unrest. It cautioned residents, particularly youths, to resist being used by individuals or groups with subversive motives.

“Parents and guardians should counsel their children and wards to stay away from any form of violence or mischief. Security operatives will enforce the law strictly and decisively,” the statement added.

The command congratulated the Muslim faithful in the state on the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir and urged them to celebrate in peace and harmony while remaining vigilant and cooperative with law enforcement agencies. It called for increased community support and prayers for peace in Kano and across Nigeria.

In a solemn appeal, the police also urged the public to remember the athletes from Kano who tragically lost their lives in a recent accident while returning from the National Sports Festival. “As we mark this sacred celebration, let us not forget to pray for the repose of the souls of our dear athletes and for the strength of their grieving families,” the command noted.

With heightened security measures in place, the police have assured residents of their safety, pledging that all necessary efforts will be made to prevent any breakdown of law and order during the Eid festivities.
