In a continued show of commitment to the welfare of its workforce, the Lagos State Government has disbursed a total sum of ₦978,110,624.45 to 510 next-of-kin beneficiaries of 280 deceased civil servants. The payment, made through the Lagos State Ministry of Establishments and Training in conjunction with LASACO Assurance Plc, was confirmed during the 102nd batch presentation of insurance death benefits held in Alausa, Ikeja.
The gesture, according to the state government, is part of its Group Life Insurance policy aimed at ensuring that the families of late employees receive timely financial support. The beneficiaries, who cut across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), received cheques ranging from hundreds of thousands to several millions, depending on the salary grade and length of service of the deceased.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Establishments and Training, Mrs. Olubusola Abidakun, emphasized that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration remains dedicated to improving the welfare of civil servants both in life and in death. She noted that the payments were not just financial settlements but a mark of the government’s compassion and responsibility towards its workforce.
“Today’s event is a testament to the value the state government places on every member of its public service. We understand the pain of losing a loved one and we are here to ensure that their contributions are not forgotten,” Abidakun stated.
She urged the beneficiaries to utilize the funds judiciously in honour of their loved ones, stressing that it is meant to bring some relief during what remains a difficult time for many families. Abidakun also advised serving civil servants to always update their Next-of-Kin information to prevent delays in claims processing.
The representative of LASACO Assurance Plc, the underwriter of the policy, lauded the Lagos State Government for its consistency and promptness in fulfilling its obligations under the Group Life Scheme. He assured beneficiaries of LASACO’s continued partnership with the state to ensure seamless processing and disbursement of claims.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Aminat Lawal, expressed deep gratitude to the state government, describing the payment as “a lifeline” after the passing of her husband who worked in the Ministry of Works. “This support means a lot to us. It shows the government cares even after service,” she said tearfully.
The Lagos State Government’s Group Life Insurance Scheme has consistently been cited as a model of best practice in Nigeria’s public service sector. With this latest disbursement, the government reinforces its commitment not only to the well-being of civil servants while in service but also to standing with their families in times of loss.
