Lagos State Government Issues Commencement Orders for Recently Assented Laws

July 5, 2025 – Lagos, Nigeria

The Government of Lagos State has officially issued Commencement Orders for several new laws recently assented to by Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, signaling their entry into force and operational readiness across the state.

The issuance of these commencement orders marks a critical step in the implementation of the legal instruments designed to enhance governance, improve service delivery, and deepen institutional reforms in Lagos.

According to the Office of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the laws cover strategic sectors including environmental protection, education, transportation, land administration, and fiscal policy, among others. These laws had earlier been passed by the Lagos State House of Assembly and subsequently received the Governor’s assent.

By invoking the commencement clause, the laws are now legally binding and enforceable throughout the state. This move is expected to boost investor confidence, streamline regulatory processes, and enhance the government’s capacity to deliver on its T.H.E.M.E.S+ agenda, especially in areas of urban renewal, inclusive governance, and economic resilience.

Legal experts and civil society stakeholders have lauded the prompt commencement, noting it as a testament to the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to rule of law and timely legislative implementation.

The government has urged all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to align their operations in accordance with the newly activated laws and ensure seamless public communication and enforcement.
