Lagos State University of Science and Technology Dismisses Three Lecturers Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

In a significant move to uphold its zero-tolerance policy on sexual misconduct, the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has dismissed three lecturers following confirmed cases of sexual harassment. The affected lecturers are Mr. Nurudeen Hassan from the Mass Communication department, and Mr. Kareem Arigbabu and Mr. Olayinka Uthman, both from the Department of Arts and Design.

The decision to terminate their employment was made by the university’s Governing Council after a thorough investigation and disciplinary proceedings. The council cited Section 5.5.2(v) of the University Senior Staff Conditions of Service as the legal basis for the dismissals, which are effective immediately.

LASUSTECH emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful campus environment, stating that allegations of sexual harassment compromise the institution’s image and disrupt the academic setting. The university’s stance reflects a broader effort to address rising concerns about sexual misconduct in educational institutions across Nigeria.

The dismissals were confirmed by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Olanrewaju Kuye, who noted that all procedural steps were followed before the lecturers were dismissed. This includes issuing queries to the affected staff members prior to their termination.

This action by LASUSTECH highlights the increasing importance of accountability and transparency in addressing sexual harassment allegations within academic settings, ensuring that students and staff feel secure and supported throughout their educational journey
