Nine Suspects Arrested in Connection with Murder of Septuagenarian and Destruction of Properties in Oyo Community

The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended nine suspects in relation to the brutal killing of a septuagenarian and the widespread destruction of properties in Aagba, a community in Surulere Local Government Area. The authorities disclosed the arrest on Thursday morning through a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso.

According to Osifeso, the suspects were detained following an attack on the Aagba community that led to the tragic death of 70-year-old Madam Rachael Bamidele. The attack, which took place on April 5, 2025, also resulted in the burning of several houses and the looting of valuable items, leaving the villagers in fear and forcing many to flee their homes.

The incident was allegedly carried out by residents of a neighboring community, who were said to be involved in a protracted dispute over a piece of land with the people of Aagba. Osifeso stated that the attack seemed to be a targeted and coordinated effort, focused on individuals engaged in an ongoing civil litigation concerning the disputed land. The violence included the destruction of nine homes and properties worth millions of Naira, which were either looted or burned.

The police quickly responded to the situation by deploying specialized intelligence units and tactical teams, including officers from the Police Mobile Force (PMF), to the affected village. This swift intervention restored peace to the area, allowing the displaced residents to return to their homes and resume normal activities without fear of further attacks.

Through investigations, police were able to arrest Salawudeen Ismaila, a 33-year-old man from the neighboring Oko community, along with eight other suspects. Additionally, three unregistered Boxer motorcycles were recovered during the operation. The police further stated that efforts are ongoing to capture additional suspects who are still on the run. The arrested suspects are expected to face charges in court soon.

The Oyo State Police Commissioner, CP Johnson O. Adenola, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the state, emphasizing the force’s zero-tolerance policy toward acts of violence, self-help, and any activities that threaten public peace. He also reassured law-abiding citizens of the command’s dedication to protecting lives and properties through proactive measures and swift responses to security breaches.
