NYSC Decries Attack on Corps Member, Promises Psychological Support Amid Ongoing Investigation

In a strongly worded communique, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denounced the assault on Corps Member Edema Elohor Jennifer (AN/24C/0626) by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South LGA, branding the incident “unwarranted and unacceptable.” The scheme confirmed that the matter has been reported to the Nigeria Police Force, with investigations underway to ensure accountability

Released on Wednesday by the Acting Director of Information, Caroline Embu, the NYSC described the conduct of the vigilante operatives as “dehumanising,” affirming that no circumstance could justify such treatment of a serving Corps Member

. The statement underscored the NYSC’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the welfare and security of all its Corps Members nationwide

In a bid to curb future occurrences, the scheme called on host communities and security agencies to collaborate proactively in ensuring Corps Members are protected throughout their service year

Moreover, embedding care into its response strategy, the NYSC revealed that administrative measures are already in motion to extend both physiological and psychological assistance to the affected Corps Member, reaffirming its dedication to her recovery and overall well-being

The incident has also attracted broader condemnation. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) condemned the brutality, calling it a flagrant violation of the dignity and rights of a national service member. In a statement issued on Tuesday night, NANS demanded a thorough investigation, accountability, and steps to prevent similar abuses in the future

As tensions simmer around the viral video capturing the assault, public concern continues to grow. NYSC management, students’ bodies, and civil society calls converge on one point: Corps Members deserve not only respect but tangible protection—within and beyond their uniforms.
