Anambra, July 9, 2025 — Terror gripped the people of Ekwulobia in Aguata LGA, Anambra State, on Wednesday morning as armed men, reportedly dressed in mafia-style outfits, invaded the community, triggering widespread panic and deadly violence.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen arrived in Toyota Sienna vehicles and began firing indiscriminately, forcing residents to flee their homes in terror. Vehicles were torched, and at least two civilians were killed, while several others were injured. Security operatives were initially absent as the violence erupted unexpectedly .
The Anambra Police Command, speaking through DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the deaths, announced that one of the attackers was neutralised, and reported the recovery of four vehicles from the scene. He assured that the State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, had deployed operatives to regain control .
Local residents have criticised existing security frameworks, including operations like Agunechemba and Udo Ga Achi, claiming they failed to prevent the attack. Many blame the violence either on Biafra agitators or flaws in local policing. One resident pleaded with Governor Soludo to “find a lasting solution” as fear grips the town .
Security forces are now carrying out sweeping operations to apprehend other assailants and restore calm in the aftermath of the brutal assault.
