Oldest Kano Emirate Councillor, Abbas Sanusi, Passes Away at 92

KANO – The Kano Emirate has lost one of its most respected elders, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, who passed away at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness.

The late prince, who held the prestigious title of Galadiman Kano, breathed his last on Monday, April 1, 2024. His passing marks the end of an era in the Kano Emirate Council, where he had served diligently since the late 1950s.

Born in 1933 in Bichi, Abbas Sanusi was a direct descendant of the royal lineage. He began his formal education at Kofar Kudu Elementary School in 1944 and later proceeded to Kano Middle School (now Rumfa College) in 1948. His leadership journey started in 1959 when his father, the then Emir of Kano, Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I, appointed him as Sarkin Dawakin Tsakar Gida and District Head of Ungogo.

His influence in the Emirate grew over the years. Under Emir Muhammadu Inuwa, he was elevated to Dan Iyan Kano in 1962. Later, during the long reign of Emir Ado Bayero, he was conferred with the title of Wambai Kano. His highest rank, Galadiman Kano, was bestowed upon him during the first tenure of his nephew, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Beyond his traditional responsibilities, Abbas Sanusi played a key role in the socio-political and economic development of Kano. His son, Abdullahi Abbas, is currently the chairman of the Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His funeral prayer (Janaza) is scheduled to take place at the Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu, Kano, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, where dignitaries, family members, and well-wishers are expected to pay their final respects.

With his passing, Kano has lost a pillar of wisdom and tradition—one whose contributions to the emirate will be remembered for generations.
