Prisons Officer Dismissed for Taking Snapshots of Inmate

ABUJA, August 4, 2025

The Nigerian Correctional Service has confirmed the dismissal of one of its officers for gross misconduct after he was found guilty of taking unauthorised photographs of an inmate in custody.

In a statement released by the Service Headquarters in Abuja, the dismissed officer was said to have violated strict internal protocols governing privacy and security within correctional facilities. The photographs, reportedly taken during duty hours, were later circulated without permission, contravening established disciplinary codes.

The disciplinary action followed a formal investigation by the internal monitoring and compliance unit of the Nigerian Correctional Service, which established the officer’s direct involvement in the breach. Officials noted that the action was not only unethical but also posed a potential risk to the safety and integrity of custodial operations.

The Controller-General of Corrections, while addressing the matter, reiterated the Service’s commitment to upholding professional standards and protecting the rights and dignity of all inmates. He warned that any personnel found undermining the core values of the institution would face the full consequences as outlined in the service’s code of conduct.

Authorities did not disclose details about the inmate involved or the motive behind the incident, but emphasised that the correctional service remains vigilant in ensuring accountability and transparency among its ranks. The dismissal serves as a warning to other officers to uphold ethical behaviour and respect the confidentiality required in handling individuals in custody.
