Seme Customs Boss Urges Inter-Agency Collaboration, Warns of Escalating Ocean Encroachment

Seme, June 21, 2025 – The Customs Area Controller, Seme Area Command, Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, has called for strengthened inter-agency synergy in securing Nigeria’s borders, while raising serious concerns over growing environmental threats posed by ocean encroachment along the Seme coastline.

Speaking on Thursday, June 19, during a study visit by students of the Nigerian Army Intelligence School, Comptroller Oramalugo stressed that no single security agency can effectively tackle Nigeria’s complex border security challenges in isolation. He emphasised that coordinated efforts among all relevant agencies are vital to maintaining territorial integrity, combating smuggling, and promoting national economic development.

“Your visit today highlights the importance of cooperation across security agencies. Securing Nigeria’s borders and fostering economic prosperity demands unified strategies and shared intelligence,” he told the visiting officers.

The Customs chief also drew attention to the worsening situation of ocean encroachment in the Seme axis, describing it as a looming environmental crisis threatening essential infrastructure, including the Joint Border Post and nearby customs facilities.

“The Seme coastline is under serious threat. Ocean encroachment is rapidly eroding the land and endangering public infrastructure. We urgently need government intervention before this situation causes irreversible damage,” he warned.

Addressing anti-smuggling operations, Oramalugo noted that the command remains vigilant and active in confronting smuggling networks and cross-border criminal activities. He added that sustained stakeholder engagement is being pursued to promote lawful alternatives for livelihood and reduce dependence on illicit trade.

“There are legal and productive avenues for earning a living. We are working with local communities and stakeholders to discourage smuggling and encourage legitimate enterprise,” he stated.

In response, Deputy Commandant of the Nigerian Army Intelligence School, Colonel Taofeek Yakubu, commended the Seme Command for its hospitality and professionalism. He also affirmed the Army’s readiness to foster deeper inter-agency collaboration in pursuit of national security goals.

The visit marks another step in bridging gaps between Nigeria’s security institutions, as both agencies reaffirm their shared commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders and addressing emerging threats, both man-made and environmental.
