Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service at the Seme Area Command have intercepted a vehicle suspected to be involved in a plot to smuggle materials potentially linked to the construction of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The dramatic bust occurred at a routine checkpoint along the Seme-Badagry expressway, where officers discovered the vehicle loaded with hazardous mercury and other suspicious components.
According to the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Timi Bomodi, the seizure followed credible intelligence and swift action by vigilant officers who stopped and thoroughly searched the vehicle. During inspection, they uncovered several canisters containing mercury, a highly regulated and dangerous substance often used in illegal mining and explosives.
“The seizure not only demonstrates our continued commitment to national security but also highlights the growing risks associated with trans-border smuggling activities,” Bomodi stated. He added that investigations are ongoing to trace the origin and intended destination of the illicit materials.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a foiled terror-related plot, as mercury is a key element in the assembly of IEDs. The driver of the vehicle is currently in custody and is assisting with further investigations.
The Nigeria Customs Service has since intensified border surveillance and reaffirmed its commitment to securing Nigeria’s frontiers against threats that could endanger public safety and national security. The agency also urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to law enforcement.
