The Sokoto State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and the State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development have pledged to strengthen collaboration to advance sports growth in the region. The commitment followed a strategic meeting between the two parties in Sokoto on Tuesday, focusing on fostering synergy to elevate grassroots talent, infrastructure, and sporting excellence.
During the engagement, SWAN Chairman Alhaji Muhammad Bello emphasized the media’s pivotal role in amplifying sports achievements and inspiring youth participation. “Sports writers are critical partners in documenting successes, holding stakeholders accountable, and mobilizing public support for initiatives. We are ready to work hand-in-hand with the Ministry to spotlight Sokoto’s potential,” Bello stated.
In response, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Bashir Gorau, lauded SWAN’s advocacy and outlined the Ministry’s roadmap. Key priorities include upgrading sporting facilities, organizing youth-focused tournaments, and implementing training programs for athletes and coaches. “We recognize the need for modern infrastructure and sustained talent development. With SWAN’s support, we aim to revive school sports competitions and identify hidden talents across local communities,” Gorau explained.
The Ministry also revealed plans to host inter-school championships and rehabilitate dilapidated stadiums to meet national standards. Both parties agreed to establish a joint committee to streamline communication and monitor progress on outlined projects.
This renewed partnership aligns with Sokoto State’s broader agenda to leverage sports as a tool for youth empowerment and social cohesion. Stakeholders expressed optimism that the collaboration will attract investment, curb restiveness, and position the state as a emerging hub for sporting talent in Northern Nigeria.
