Super Eagles Soar Higher In Latest FIFA Rankings

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have continued their upward trajectory in world football as the latest FIFA rankings released today shows the national team climbing to 43rd position globally, our correspondent reports.

According to the fresh rankings announced by the world football governing body on Thursday, the three-time African champions moved one place up from their previous 44th position which they occupied at the end of 2024.

The improvement, though slight, reflects the team’s recent positive performances, particularly their victory against Rwanda in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The crucial home win has kept alive Nigeria’s hopes of securing a spot at the tournament scheduled to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.

On the continental stage, Nigeria now sits as the sixth-best team in Africa, just two places behind the current African champions, Côte d’Ivoire, who made a remarkable five-place jump to 41st position globally and fifth in Africa.

Morocco has overtaken Senegal to become Africa’s highest-ranked team, now placed 12th in the world, while Senegal dropped to second in Africa and 19th globally. Egypt and Algeria complete Africa’s top four, occupying the 32nd and 36th positions respectively on the global chart.

Meanwhile, at the summit of world football, Argentina maintained their grip on the number one position following impressive recent victories. European powerhouses dominate the top five with Spain holding firm in second place, followed by France in third, England in fourth, and five-time World Cup winners Brazil completing the elite group in fifth position.

The Netherlands have climbed one spot to sixth, pushing Portugal down to seventh. The remaining top ten positions are occupied by Belgium, Italy, and Germany in eighth, ninth, and tenth places respectively.

Football enthusiasts and analysts will be keeping close eyes on the next FIFA rankings, which according to the world football governing body, will be released on July 10.
Our correspondent gathered that the Super Eagles technical crew sees this improvement as motivation ahead of their upcoming international fixtures as they continue their campaign to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
