Twelve New Political Groups Seek Registration as Parties Ahead of 2027 Elections

Abuja, Nigeria – July 4, 2025 — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the receipt of twelve new applications from political associations seeking recognition as registered political parties in Nigeria.

A top official of the Commission disclosed that the applications were submitted in recent weeks and are currently undergoing preliminary assessment. The move comes as the political atmosphere begins to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to INEC, each application will be evaluated strictly in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022. Criteria include proof of national spread, functional administrative structures in at least two-thirds of the states, a valid constitution, and evidence of internal democracy.

INEC emphasized that while the right to political association is constitutionally guaranteed, not all applicants will automatically qualify for registration. Only those that meet the established legal and institutional standards will be approved.

This growing interest in political participation reflects the vibrant nature of Nigeria’s democratic space. However, election analysts have raised concerns over ballot congestion and administrative logistics if the number of registered parties becomes excessive.

The Commission reassured Nigerians that it is committed to managing the process diligently to maintain electoral integrity and uphold democratic values.
